1990年免试保送北京师范大学生物系生物学专业开始本科学习；1994年免试保送北京师范大学生物系生态学专业硕士研究生, 师从房继明教授开展动物行为生态研究；1996年师从孙儒泳院士直接攻读博士学位；1999年毕业于北京师范大学生物系生态学专业，获博士学位，留校任教至今。
现任国家濒危物种科学委员会委员；中华环保联合会常务理事；中国动物学会常务理事，保护生物学分会副主任、兽类学分会常务理事；中国生态学会动物生态专业委员会副主任；全国中学生生物学竞赛委员会副主任；联合国全球环境问题科学、政策和商业论坛(UN-SPBF)高级顾问；国际保护生物学会(SCB)监察委员会委员；《Conservation Biology》、《兽类学报》编委；世界自然保护联盟(IUCN)物种生存委员会亚洲象专家组成员。
从分子、个体、种群多尺度系统开展中国野生亚洲象保护生物学研究，系统探明了其种群数量、地理分布、行为习性、遗传结构及象亲内皮疱疹病毒感染本底特征，揭示了人类活动、气候变化等外界干扰驱动下，野生亚洲象行为模式与生理特征的适应性演化规律。基于种群与行为生态学的系统研究成果，团队明确了景观尺度下的核心保护策略，提出构建生态廊道、修复退化栖息地、精准化解人象冲突是野生亚洲象种群保护与恢复的关键举措。此外，系统探究了生态系统服务价值评估、社区公益保护地建设与生态补偿机制、野生动物贸易管控、气候变化等关键要素对濒危物种保护的影响；同时深耕公众消费端行为碳减排的理论体系与实践路径，为生物多样性保护与生态可持续发展提供了多维度理论支撑与实践方案。
