研究主要关注“运行世界的小东西”：昆虫，结合数据库建模及野外实地调查探讨昆虫多样性的维持机制及其对全球变化在不同尺度的响应，具体而言：
宏生态学/生物地理学：昆虫在大空间尺度上的多样性和分布格局是怎样的？背后的驱动机制是什么？会如何响应全球变化？我以蚂蚁作为主要研究对象，领导国际合作团队首次描绘了全球及欧洲地区的蚂蚁地理区划，作为骨干成员开发了全球蚂蚁丰度数据库及地图，估算了地球上蚂蚁的总量，未来将进一步探索蚂蚁及其它昆虫多样性格局形成的历史过程、维持机制及其对全球变化的响应。
群落生态学/功能生态学：昆虫群落的组成与结构如何随时间发生变化、如何响应不同的自然环境和干扰梯度？昆虫群落的变化如何影响其生态系统功能？我在热带及亚热带地区开展了大量野外调查研究蚂蚁及其它节肢动物的时间动态和对栖息地转变的响应，未来将重点关注温带地区生态恢复和人类干扰对昆虫及其他节肢动物群落不同维度的塑造。
