1980-1987年于北京师大生物学系学习，先后获理学学士和硕士学位。1994－1998年于北京师大生科院在职学习，获理学博士学位。1987年留校任教。1988-1989年在英国作访问学者一年。多次参加中国南极和北极考察。主编或参加编写《中国鸟类图志》、《中国森林鸟类》、《中国鸟类的分类与分布名录》等著作，在国内外发表论文200余篇。1994年获全国首届郑作新鸟类科学青年奖，1996年获北京师范大学优秀青年教师奖，1998年获教育部科技进步二等奖，2000年获国家自然科学二等奖(第二完成人)。2001年享受政府特殊津贴。 2012年获中国科协“全国优秀科技工作者”称号。2019年荣获“庆祝中华人民共和国成立70周年”纪念章。2024年获国家林草局野生动植物保护领域优秀个人的表扬。现任世界雉类协会会长、中国动物学会鸟类学分会主任委员。兼任国际鸟类学家联盟委员会委员，IUCN雉类专家组成员，中国人与生物圈专家咨询委员会委员、中国动物学会常务理事，中国野生动物保护协会常务理事，北京动物学会名誉理事长，质兰基金会副理事长，SEE基金会科学顾问以及《Avian Research》和《野生动物学报》副主编、《生态学报》、《湿地科学》、《动物学杂志》等刊物的编委。

■长期从事鸟类生态学和保护生物学方面的教学与研究工作，主持国家重点研发项目课题、国家科技支撑课题、国家自然科学基金项目、国家林业与草原局课题以及国际合作项目多项。主要开展如下领域的研究工作：湿地水鸟迁徙动态与栖息地保护、珍稀濒危雉类保护生物学研究、鸟类繁殖生物学与行为生态学研究、鸟类系统发育与分子进化等。
